Parade Day Information

Parade form-up takes place at the east end of downtown. Horse entries form up on the grounds of Fort Calgary. Floats, bands and all other entries are put into parade order in the area between 6th and 3rd Streets S.E. and between 7th and 5th Avenues S.E. Your section coordinator will advise you of exact directions close to parade day.

Most entries arrive in the form-up area on the Thursday evening before the parade. Security is provided overnight. If you are arriving the Friday morning, please note that all streets in the downtown core are closed at 7:30 a.m. Roads are barricaded and no one (not even late parade entries) are allowed through. In addition, there is no parking in the form-up area, so make other arrangements for support vehicles.

The parade route covers 4.5 kilometers from its starting point at 9th Avenue and 1st Street S.E. to the official finish line at 6th Avenue and Macleod Trail S.E.

Be prepared for Calgary’s weather! Over the years, parade day has varied from very hot to very cold, a few times very wet and one memorable year a little snowy. Heat causes the most serious problems and if the day is warm and sunny, ensure that water is available for everyone with your entry.

Your section coordinator and assisting committee volunteers will make sure your entry is in the right spot in the form-up area. Form-up and dispersal personnel will direct you on to the route. Transit volunteers handle the two LRT crossings on the route, and may hold your entry to allow a train to go through. Our route marshals, on police motorcycles, have complete control of the parade movement. They may ask you to speed up or slow down and their instructions must be followed.

All parade participants are invited to a barbecue on Thursday evening prior to the parade at 6 p.m. on the Fort Calgary grounds. Come and enjoy Alberta beef burgers (limited veggie burgers available), western entertainment and meet some of the other people participating in the parade. On parade day, all participants are invited to a breakfast on the Fort Calgary grounds. The breakfast starts at 6 a.m. and ends when the food runs out.

We hope to see you there!
